Pool fencing
Regulations concerning fences for swimming pools reside in Quebec and are mainly governed by the Residential Swimming Pool Safety Regulations (in force since 2010 and updated in 2021). However, no update for 2025 has yet been officially announced. Here are the current rules that should remain in place for 2025, barring future changes:
Pool fence regulations 2025
- Minimum height The fence must have a minimum height of 1.2 metres (approx. 4 feet).
- Doors and gates : All doors and gates must be equipped with a automatic closing mechanism and a safety latch at least 1.5 meters above the floor.
- Bar spacing The bars of the fence must not allow the passage of a spherical object of 10 cm diameter or more, to prevent children from climbing up or between the bars.
- Clearance The fence must be at a minimum distance of 1 metre any object that could be used for climbing (e.g. trees, garden furniture).
- Above-ground pools For above-ground pools, if the walls are at least 1.2 metres high, they can be used as a protective barrier. However, access points (such as ladders) must be secured.
1. Types of pool fencing
- Tempered glass fences :
- Modern and elegant, it offers an unobstructed view of the pool while providing protection.
- Weather-resistant and easy to maintain.
- Usually with stainless steel or aluminum posts.
- Aluminium fences :
- Lightweight, durable and rust-resistant.
- Available in different styles and heights, they are often used for a more traditional or contemporary look.
- Option of vertical panels with narrow gaps to prevent climbing.
- PVC fencing :
- Robust, moisture-resistant and maintenance-free.
- Available in various colors and styles.
- Durable, economical material.
- Mesh fences with safety net :
- Often used as a temporary option, they are easy to install and remove.
- Safety nets are designed to prevent access by children, yet are easily retractable by adults.
- Wooden fences :
- Natural aesthetic option, but requires more maintenance due to exposure to humidity.
- Height and style can be customized to suit the design of your outdoor space.
2. Mandatory safety features
- Regulatory height Pool fences generally have to be at least 1.20 m high to comply with safety standards.
- Gates with automatic locking Gates must be equipped with automatic closing systems and locks at a height inaccessible to young children.
- Spacing between rungs To prevent children from climbing or falling through, the spacing between the bars must be narrow.
3. Professional installation
- Compliance with local standards Fences must comply with current safety regulations for residential swimming pools.
- Personalization Choice of materials, heights and integration with the style of the surrounding landscape.
- Warranty and maintenance : Maintenance services available to ensure the durability of the fence over time.
Mesh fences(frost)
Fences made of chain link (or wire fences) are a popular solution for homes, especially for securing swimming pools (lozange 30mm), gardens and property perimeters. Here's an overview of the features, benefits and options for this type of fence.
1. Characteristics of chain link fencing
- Materials : Generally made of galvanized steel to resist corrosion, some can be covered with vinyl for a more aesthetic appearance and better protection against the elements.
- Diamond mesh The classic diamond pattern provides a sturdy yet economical structure.
- Different heights available : These fences can be installed in heights ranging from 1 metre to 2.5 metres, depending on requirements (safety, aesthetics).
- Color customization Vinyl-coated chain link fencing: If you opt for vinyl-coated chain link fencing, you can choose from a range of colors (black, green, white, etc.) to better integrate the fence into your outdoor space.
2. Advantages of chain link fencing
- Affordable cost : Compared with other types of fencing such as wood, aluminum or glass, chain link is an economical yet durable option.
- Easy maintenance Very little maintenance is required. Simply check regularly for corrosion, and repair if damage occurs.
- Visibility While it provides a clear boundary and prevents intrusion, it doesn't block the view, which can be advantageous in a garden or around a swimming pool.
- Durability : Chain link fencing, especially galvanized or vinyl-coated, is weather-resistant and can last for decades.
3. Specific applications
- Safety around swimming pools : For swimming pools, a 30mm chain link fence can be used to delimit access while meeting safety standards (height, automatic locks on gates).
- Gardens and property perimeters : Ideal for marking the boundaries of a plot of land, while keeping visibility open.
- Pet areas Effective for containing pets while maintaining good air circulation.
4. Installation and options
- Posts and brackets Galvanized steel posts are generally used to support the mesh, with reinforcement options for taller fences or more windy environments.
- Matching gates You can install chain link gates with locking systems to secure access to certain areas, such as a swimming pool or garden.
- Safety accessories For installation around swimming pools, you can add reinforcement bars or anti-climbing guards at the top of the fence.
High security fencing
High-security fencing is designed to offer maximum protection against intrusion, vandalism or other external threats. They are often used to secure sensitive installations such as high-end residential properties, industrial sites, critical infrastructures and government buildings. Here's an overview of the different options and features of high-security fencing.
1. Features of high-security fencing
Robust materials :
Galvanized steel, reinforced aluminum, or even concrete panels for more specific applications.
Fences are often treated against rust, corrosion and weathering to guarantee their durability.
Important height :
High-security fences are generally taller than standard residential fences, with typical heights between 2.5 and 4 meters, or even more.
Anti-climbing bars :
Many models are equipped with anti-climbing devices (spikes, barbed wire, wire, or sharp blades at the top) to prevent intrusion over the fence.
Welded mesh or dense mesh panels :
Tightly-welded wire mesh panels, or dense mesh panels, prevent people from climbing or cutting the fence easily.
The bars are often too close together to be crossed or cut quickly, even with specialized tools.
Reinforced gates :
High-security gates are equipped with reinforced locking systems (electromagnetic or manual), often coupled with surveillance systems (cameras, motion sensors).
Electric fences :
Some high-security fences incorporate electric wires capable of delivering deterrent discharges in the event of an intrusion attempt.
Integrated detection systems :
Monitoring and detection systems can be integrated into the fence (vibration sensors, infrared detectors, cameras, etc.) to warn of approach or climbing.
2. Types of high-security fencing
Welded wire mesh fence :
Extremely strong, it is made of metal panels with welded reinforcement bars for greater resistance to cutting and deformation.
Used to protect industrial sites, military infrastructures or sensitive residential areas.
Razor wire fence :
Made up of barbed wire at the top or along the entire height of the fence, this option is often used for prisons, military installations and government sites.
Razor wire is a more aggressive version of barbed wire, difficult to cross without injury.
Electric fence :
High-voltage electric wires are integrated into the fence to deter any attempt to climb or touch the fence.
Often combined with electronic surveillance systems.
Concrete panel fence :
These fences are strong and resistant, with an imposing structure, often used to secure sensitive infrastructures such as warehouses or strategic installations.
3. Benefits of high-security fencing
Maximum protection: They offer a high level of security and deterrence against intrusion, theft and vandalism.
Resistance to attack: The materials used are designed to resist cutting, bending or climbing. High-security fencing is also difficult to break through.
Active surveillance and deterrence: The addition of detection systems, cameras and alarms enhances security by immediately detecting and reporting any intrusion attempt.
Customized to your needs: High-security fencing can be adapted to suit the level of protection required, the environment, and the architecture of the site.
4. Common applications
Luxury homes: To protect high-value properties against burglary and other external threats.
Critical infrastructures: power plants, factories, military installations, or sensitive sites requiring strict protection.
Industrial sites and warehouses: Protection of materials and equipment against theft and vandalism.
Government buildings: Securing sensitive official buildings, prisons and embassies.
